Nice Legacy Tool

 July 8, 2010
By Richard P. Clarke
This tool works on belts up to 3/8″ thick and 3/4″ wide. You have to give the tool a firm squeeze to get it to open up the jaw that otherwise only has a 1/16″ gap. This tool helps you set belt tension according to manufacturer’s specs rather than “feels about right”. Too loose and belts will slip or vibrate excessively. Too tight and bearings will suffer. Setting the belts to spec should maximize belt and belt-driven component life.

Gauge comes with a calibration certificate and minimal instructions. Feels like it will last a lifetime in the toolbox, as long as the uncovered dial face is protected.

I knew there was something wrong with the way me engine was running. I even took my jeep to a shop to do my belt tension. Still didn’t feel right so i finally said what the hay I’m going to buy a belt tension gage just to make sure. Come to find out that they had it way to loose, My 1988 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0L in-line six needed to be at 140lb-160lb for a used belt, and 180lb-200lb for anew belt. They had it at 50lbs, I have 290,000 Miles on that motor, and now i know it will last me allot longer what a relief. Thank you guys so much for making my year, and years to come.

Belt Tension Gauge

Called for in the Infinity G35 coupe OEM maintenance manual when changing belts. The OTC 7763 worked like a champ. Easy to read and well made.

Great tool but expensive and large

This is definitely the most accurate way to get the tension of an accessory belt. Compared to the Kriket style gauge, its no contest. I did back to back tests with this and the Kriket, and the Kriket was all over the place depending where you placed it on the belt and how far you depressed it. This had accurate precise readings every time. That being said, its hugely expensive and so large that I needed to remove the undertray of my car (a 45 minute process) in order to use it.

Works well

Its amazing that auto shops don’t seem to use these things. Checked my belt tension with this after a shop reinstalled my drive belts (they had to remove them to repair something else) and the tension was way under the minimum per the manual.

The sad thing was that this was a shop that prided itself on being an expert in my model car.

I guess they use the "its good enough" approach to precision. Especially good for cars that don’t have auto-tensioning systems.

Helps you keep squealing belts away and also will stop you from over-tensioning and possibly damaging expensive parts!

The only drawback is that its quite large and is hard to fit in tight spaces if you have a cramped engine space.

Very well made. Accepts thick serpentine belts.

Great tool perfectly sets tension. Far better than thumb pressure and a ruler. One reviewer says it only opens to 1/16 inch. Not true. There is a lot of spring tension in this device. You have to give the tool a firm squeeze to get it to open it up. Too bad the reviewer wasn’t strong enough to use this tool. Very well made. Takes only a second to use. Have used hundreds of times over past 5 years.

Great Gauge

I was having issues with my belts after taking my vehicle to Brake Masters, so I decided to check things myself and, with the help of this gauge, found that they put my belts on too loose. I don’t understand how they could mess that up, but this helped me correct the issue and if I need another gauge, I’ll buy this one. I also replace & check my own belts now, as a result of this product.

I LIKE IT

It deffinitly helps but also can be difficult to read at times because you have to pop it. and i also feel sometimes its not accurate on the exact amount of tension. but at the same time you dont need the exact amout
